Nectar Balm is composed of Nectar Ease, essential and cold-pressed oils allowing the balm to be rapidly absorbed into the skin.
Initially there was a demand for a topical cream for people with diabetes or taking medication that excluded them from enjoying the benefits of Nectar Ease. As it turns out Nectar Balm’s benefits have been much wider than what the initial demand called for. Nectar Balm also meets the needs of people with active lifestyles and those in occupations that make demands on the muscles, joints and ligaments. It is widely used by people who have very localized arthritic pain and those who occasionally experience “breakthrough” pain, a common occurrence with many arthritic patients. It is a product that should be in everybody’s medicine cabinets!
The top quality cream will not dry the skin but rather keeps it moist and acts like a deep heat. A little goes a long way making Nectar Balm a very economical and pleasant way to ease pain. Whether you have overdone it at the gym, in the garden, or they just ache from a bad night’s sleep reach for Nectar Balm a bee venom and Manuka honey cream that delivers fast and effective relief.
Visit shoppri.com to purchase your Nectar Balm to begin the muscle and joint relief today. A 100 g jar of Nectar Balm is a ‘must have’ balm and an essential part of any first-aid kit.
A UAE University official said, “Though the honey, obtained from nectar collected by honey bees from Manuka trees found in New Zealand, has been recognized for its antibacterial and wound healing properties for many years, it has never been investigated for its potential effects on cancer cells.” The researchers then carried out an extensive series of experiments to uncover the molecular basis of Manuka Honey’s anti-cancer activity.
The UAE University researchers have discovered that Manuka Honey could effectively inhibit the growth of a variety of cancer cell types including breast, skin, and colon cancer. He said, the research has also highlighted the honey’s potential property of reducing the toxic side effects associated with chemotherapy treatment in cancer patients.
Lead researcher Dr. Basel Al Ramadi, professor and chairman of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, and his team used three different cancer cells in the research. According to Dr. Al Ramadi, “[It] demonstrated that the addition of exceedingly small amounts of Manuka Honey, as little as 1.0 %, can stop the growth of cancer cells. Our findings provided conclusive evidence that Manuka acts directly by inducing apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in cancer cells.”
Apoptosis is a physiological process where the death of cells occurs as a normal and controlled part of an organism’s growth or development. This process is tightly regulated so that, in adult tissues, cell death exactly balances cell division. The human body uses apoptosis to balance and maintain normal cell numbers. “If this were not the case, excessive apoptosis causes tissue atrophy (waste away), whereas insufficient apoptosis would lead to uncontrolled cell proliferation, such as in cancer,” he explained.
Manuka Honey was found to induce the death of cancer cells through the same process as the human body. Professor Al Ramadi said that his team is optimistic about what these new developments may mean in terms of potential new treatments for certain types of cancer.

According to Justin Bergman, “When Peter Molan, a now-retired scientist and academic in New Zealand, began researching the properties of honey more than 30 years ago, there was little demand for a type made by bees that pollinated the flowers of the native Manuka bush.” People were not interested in Manuka Honey due to its strong and unappealing flavor.
The discovery of the antibacterial properties of Manuka honey have allowed it to become well known and a globally desired honey. Manuka Honey was found to contain unique antibacterial properties that come from hydrogen peroxide in the honey. The antibacterial properties of Manuka Honey have increased its popularity and people are now rushing to buy this honey only found in New Zealand.
Spreading the word
“Manuka Honey has moved from the margins of the honey world into a globalized, multimillion-dollar industry.” Its popularity has grown and celebrity endorsements have only increased the global demand for Manuka Honey. Nonetheless, China has never been interested in the attention brought on by celebrity endorsements. Brett Hewlett, chief executive officer of Comvita, New Zealand’s biggest Manuka honey producer said, “Word of mouth has always been a key driver of our marketing activities, the thing they trust more than anything is word of mouth through a friend or relative.” The Chinese rely on the people they trust the most to make their decision about Manuka Honey consumption.
The price of rapid growth
The Chinese interest in Manuka Honey stems from their high demand for health foods. “Now demand is exploding among the affluent in China, where enduring concerns over food safety have prompted an insatiable appetite for all-natural health food products from abroad.” The high demand for Manuka Honey in China has caused the beekeepers in New Zealand to fight in order to keep up with the high demand. In the past two years, Comvita has had to double the number of hives it owns to 30,000 to maintain a steady supply of honey.
The spike in demand from China has also put pressure on producers to keep up. “We’re honestly not able to meet the full demand,” Hewlett admitted. Along with high demands comes high profits for New Zealand beekeeping industry. “It’s like a gold rush going on,” Molan said. The Manuka Honey demand has increased the profits made from the honey. As the Manuka Honey demand continues to grow New Zealand will continue to find ways to keep up with the supply of Manuka Honey.
For the past 30 years Manuka Honey has had a great impact in the world. Pacific Resources International was the very first company to introduce Manuka Honey to the United States.

This blog article is intended to give clarity to consumers that they are buying certified Manuka Honey that contains antibacterial properties. Mark Twain once penned, “There are lies, damn lies, and statistics!” Too often slick marketers confuse consumers through misdirection – and that includes manipulating the grading systems of Manuka Honey.
But First, Why Manuka Honey Is So Unique
Manuka Honey is sought after because it contains antibacterial activity. All honey starts out with these properties but when it is heated for pasteurization, the heat severely degrades the hydrogen peroxide inherent in honey and therefore degrades the antibacterial honey – but Manuka Honey still displays antibacterial properties even after pasteurization!
However, NOT all “marketed” Manuka Honey has these antibacterial properties, hence the creation of a grading system that measures the active ingredient methylglyoxal (MGO) responsible for these properties. Numbers can be misleading – it’s not always the higher the number the better the honey – it’s about the medicinal properties the honey contains and what grading system is used. For example, a UMF 10+ factor is much better than a KFactor 22 as explained below.
The Four Most Common Grading Systems and Which Are Best
Pacific Resources International (PRI) uses the UMF grading system for its UMF product range of Manuka Honey. The PRI Manuka range is tested for the combined peroxide (PA) and non-peroxide (NPA) activity. This range generally has a lower UMF rating so is not rated as UMF but still very effective. Independent lab tests are available for every jar of honey.
The Bottom Line – Bee Informed
Look for a product with the label designation of UMF Manuka Honey and MGS. Third party independent testing and verification ensure the quality of the honey that’s in the bottle will match or exceed what’s on the label.
You deserve the best and have confidence that you are buying the highest quality of Manuka Honey from New Zealand.

Introducing PRI’s New Australian Manuka Honey!
Manuka Honey is collected with care from the down under native Manuka trees in Australia. Australia has over 80 Manuka species within it’s native remote forests, including the same native Leptospermum scoparium species that is found in New Zealand. This diverse environment allows for the highest quality Manuka Honey production. Pacific Resources imports this pure raw honey directly from the Australian suppliers who take pride in producing only the highest quality products.
Manuka Honey is the only honey found so far that exhibits non-peroxide activity, or NPA. This is thought to be due to Methylglyoxal (MG), a unique compound found within Manuka Honey. This makes the honey a powerful digestive aid, assisting with allergies and immune defense. It is a potent anti-bacterial agent when used topically for minor wounds and burns. It is also heat tolerant, enabling it to reach your digestive system without losing any of its beneficial properties.

Energy Gels are the latest rage for endurance athletes and weekend warriors that want to get better overall performance including increased energy, extra calories and replenishing electrolytes. However, these energy gels contain processed ingredients; so the savvy and more health-conscious athletes look for more natural alternatives (and better tasting).
Novak Djokovic Is an Advocate in His Training Regime
More and more sports enthusiasts are turning to Manuka Honey as that natural energy boost as a natural carbohydrate. Look no further than Novak Djokovic, a world-class tennis player who consumes two spoonfuls of New Zealand Manuka Honey every day to help increase his endurance and is prized for its well-known antibacterial properties.
As Novak stated, “I know what you’re thinking: Honey is sugar. Well, yes, it is. But your body needs sugar. In particular, it needs fructose, the sugar found in fruits, some vegetables, and especially honey. What it doesn’t need is processed sucrose, the stuff in chocolate, soda, or most energy drinks that gives you an instant sugar shot in the body, where you feel like “Wow!” I don’t like “wow.” “Wow” is no good. If you have “wow” now, that means in thirty minutes you’re going to have “woe.”
Manuka Honey Lozenges – Doing Double Duty
As an added benefit, PRI’s award-winning Manuka Honey Lozenges can soothe a sore throat when athletes have to deal with running in cold weather. Not only do these lozenges work as well as energy gels, they taste a lot better! In fact, the flavor of Manuka Honey is rich and smooth with the right balance of sweetness.
The Product of Choice for Sports Nutritionists
Honey is a natural form of energy, free of stimulants and artificial ingredients. Sports nutritionists have for decades recommended honey for training and competition. It is packed with carbohydrates – with fast release glucose and slower release fructose – it is ideal for providing athletes with sustained fuel. And while taking Manuka Honey that is antioxidant-rich, it protects the bloodstream and nourishes cells. And perhaps equally impressive, honey does not interfere with the digestive system and removes discomfort associated with artificial sweeteners.
The Final Analysis
The final takeaway is that science is catching up to what we all have known – Manuka Honey is fit for an athlete and those wanting the best in nutrition.

At present there are no cures for CF, however there are some treatments for helping to reduce the symptoms of infections caused by it. However, with the over use of antibiotics, the two most commonly seen opportunistic bacteria found in the respiratory infections of CF patients are becoming resistant to antibiotics. This leaves the susceptible lungs of CF patients at a loss for treatment. These bacteria are known as P. aeruginosa and Burkholderia spp. They can mutate and form a biofilm in the lungs of CF patients, which is essentially a microcolony embedded in the mucus membrane of the patient.
A recent study has begun testing with Manuka honey in combination with antibiotics known to kill off these bacteria in their non-mutated state. They have found that when manuka honey is combined with specific antibiotics they work synergistically to destroy the bacteria that is antibiotic resistant. This reduces the amount of the antibiotic needed to treat the infection.
The antibiotics used in the study were tobramycin and colistin as they are licensed for use as an inhaled antibiotic for chronic respiratory infections. They found that it is possible to combine manuka honey (Pacific Resources) with these drugs to be inhaled by patients with antibiotic resistant strains in their lungs. This combination could be the perfect solution to biofilms and antibiotic resistant forms of bacteria in CF patients.
This study has opened the doors to further research and we hope to see clinical studies that can determine the potential and efficiency of this combination for patients suffering from CF.

]]>“A paleo diet also known as Paleolithic diet or Stone Age diet is a dietary plan based on foods similar to what might be eaten during the Paleolithic era. It dates back to approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. This diet includes foods that could be obtained by hunting and gathering including lean meats, fish, fruits and vegetables.”[1] It limits foods that became a product of agriculture such as grains and legumes. The focus of this dietary plan is to restore the way of eating that is more similar to what ancient humans ate.
Advocates of the paleo diet believe in an idea known as discordance hypothesis, that the human body is naturally not matched to the current day diet that developed with farming practices and changed how people ate. This includes eating dairy products, legumes and grains. They believe that our body has not adapted to process such products and therefore could contribute to the prevalence of some health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
Manuka Honey in Paleo
“Manuka Honey is a type of honey that is native to New Zealand. It is produced by the bees that pollinate the manuka bush. Manuka honey has traditionally been used for wound healing, soothing sore throat and improving digestive symptoms because of its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties” [3]. Along with being healthy and surprisingly nutritious, Manuka honey stands out from all other sweeteners that is why many people who follow the Paleo diet use honey as a sweetener or a sugar –substitute, adding it to their coffee or tea in replacement of cane sugar and using it in cooking too.
The Bottom Line
A Paleo diet has its pros and cons. You might want to follow a paleo diet to lose or maintain a healthy weight and help improve your health but it could bring some potential risks too.
Still, getting enough exercise, avoiding stress and eating a nutritious and balanced meal are a few of many ways to have a healthy body.

Honey in general has a lower GI than regular table sugar, meaning that it does not necessarily raise blood sugar levels as quickly as refined sugar might, but it should still be used cautiously by anyone who is diabetic.

]]>Diverticulitis is a disease caused by an infection in the gut and although it has been thoroughly studied medical professionals still do not completely understand its cause. It is believed however to be due to a low fiber diet. When one consumes a low fiber diet the intestines have to work harder (push harder) to move digested food through the bowel. It is believed that this increased pressure is what causes the small pockets in the intestines to form. However, many people can have these pockets and never feel any pain from it while other suffer with fever, chills, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and belly pain. (1) These symptoms are caused when food gets trapped in the pockets and the area becomes infected. One of the bacteria’s seen to increase in people is the bacteria C. difficile which is a bacteria that naturally exists in the gut. However, in the presence of inflammation and infection the good gut bacteria are reduced and can no longer keep this C. difficile in check. This however, is not the only bacteria that can flourish in the presence of infection caused my diverticulitis.
Although there are no direct studies on Manuka and diverticulitis if we look at the research that exists on manuka honey and digestive disorders I think we can draw the conclusion that it would be helpful to those who suffer from this condition. Manuka has been reported to have an inhibitory effect on 60 species of bacteria, some species of fungi and viruses. (4)Therefore, it has the ability to limit bacteria growth and reduce the chances of an infection when food gets trapped in these pouches.
Manuka honey’s antibacterial agent Methylglyoxal has been proven to work against a wide variety of pathogenic bacteria. In a study done in Wales, using Manuka 18+, provided evidence that manuka honey does exhibit bactericidal action against bacterial infection from C. difficile. (2) One of the most common bacterial infections to hospitalize people with gastrointestinal infections.
Oral administration of honey has also been found to protect against gastrointestinal infection through blocking the attachment of pathogenic microorganisms to the intestinal epithelium. This represents a potential strategy for disease prevention in the area of gastrointestinal infections according to a study done in 2013. Manuka honey has also been found to increases and support the growth of Bifidobacterium via the presence of a variety of oligosaccharides. (3) Bifidobacterium is one of the good gut bacteria that works to keep the gut healthy. Recent studies also suggest that honey is able to inhibit inflammatory parameters caused by bacterial infections.(4)
But how do we know what or how much to take. This is an important key to know when using Manuka honey as an alternative treatment. The first step is to know is where the manuka honey is from. Most studies have confirmed that manuka from New Zealand or Australia have higher antibacterial properties than honeys from other countries. The two activity ratings that are accepted in the health food industry are UMF, which is your high grade activity, and biologically active, which is your lower grade of activity. For use as an alternative treatment for intestinal infection and inflammation 1 teaspoon twice a day of UMF 10-15+ should be used during flare ups. This can be taken straight off the spoon or diluted in warm water. For day to day maintenance however a biologically active honey of 10-15 should suffice in the most case of diverticulitis. This can be used freely as it is the lower activity. However, as UMF is the only regulated certification one should be wary of biologically active claims and make sure that your supplier is getting third party testing on the honeys activity and not just claiming its activity. Pacific Resources was the first to introduce Active Manuka Honey in 1989, has the largest selection and has all of their biologically active honeys tested and will happily supply a certification on the rated level for their products from a reliable third party lab.

]]>Honey… Natural Energy
When you are running low on energy, you tend to choose caffeinated drinks that give you the quick burst of energy your body needs to stay awake and focused. Instead of drinking sugary energy drinks, why not try an all-natural energy source?
Manuka honey is a source of carbohydrates, providing 17 grams per tablespoon, which makes it ideal for your working muscles since carbohydrates are the primary fuel the body uses for energy. Carbohydrates are necessary in the diet to help maintain muscle glycogen, also known as stored carbohydrates, which are the most important fuel source for athletes to help them keep going.
Whether you’re looking for an energy boost or just a sweet reward after a long workout, honey is a quick, easy, and delicious all-natural energy source!
Honey as an Athletic Aid
Honey helps you stay healthy and active by being the source of energy you need to go that extra mile. Find out how honey helps aid your body through every stage of a workout.
Pre-exercise: For years, sports nutritionists have recommended eating carbohydrates before an athletic activity for an added energy boost. As with many carbohydrates, pure honey may be an effective form to ingest just prior to exercise. When honey is eaten before a workout or athletic activity, it is released into the system at a steady rate throughout the event.
During Exercise: Consuming carbohydrates, such as honey, during a workout helps your muscles stay nourished longer and delays fatigue, versus not using any aid or supplement. Next time you reach for a simple bottle of water, add some honey to it – it might give you that much-needed athletic boost!
Post-exercise: An optimal recovery plan is essential for any athlete. Research shows that ingesting a combination of carbohydrates and protein immediately following exercise (within 30 minutes) is ideal to refuel and decrease delayed-onset muscle soreness. Therefore, honey is a great source of carbohydrate to combine with post-workout protein supplements. In addition to promoting muscle recuperation and glycogen restoration, carb-protein combinations sustain favorable blood sugar concentrations after training.
Helpful Tips:
When planning your athletic training program, remember that honey is a source of carbohydrates, providing 17 grams at just 64 calories per tablespoon. Combining honey with fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains and other healthful foods can add to your total nutrition and give you a great natural energy boost. Try these tips to fuel your diet with the sweet goodness of honey!

]]>Hey there! If you've made it here, that means you probably already know a bit about Manuka honey, and now you want to learn how to use it to upgrade your baked goods & desserts.
If you are new here, Manuka honey contains concentrated Methylglyoxal, aka MGO, at levels not found in other honey. MGO gives Manuka honey a wide range of benefits, from fighting inflammation to improving oral health. You can read more about it here: - https://www.shoppri.com/blogs/news/everything-you-need-to-know-about-manuka-honey
You may ask, why should I go to the trouble of using honey instead of sugar? Honey has a lower GI rating than sugar, meaning it gives a slower energy release vs. the sharp spike you get with regular sugar. It also contains more fructose than glucose, so it takes less honey to achieve the same sweetness level you'd get from regular sugar.

]]>If you’re interested in Manuka honey, you’ve likely noticed the numbers listed on most jars. You’ll see ratings such as 10+, 20+, 30+, and also letters like UMF and MGO. What do these mean?
It can be incredibly confusing!
Manuka honey is not like any other honey. It has additional attributes that make it highly prized and beneficial. Not just any honey can be called Manuka honey.
The New Zealand Government has a standard for Manuka Honey and every jar of Manuka Honey (not bulk sizes) packed in New Zealand has to pass this test in order to get an export license. However, this does not apply to Manuka not packed in New Zealand.
In my last post about Manuka honey, we discussed UMF vs Non-UMF and how each grading system is used to grade Manuka honey. There are very specific compounds that must be present in adequate amounts in order for honey to be considered Manuka honey. Each of these systems evaluates those important attributes.
One of the most important attributes measured is the methylglyoxal content. This is the non-peroxide, antibacterial activity that makes Manuka honey so special. PRI uses an independent grading system measure the methylglyoxal content of honey, but do so slightly differently. Click here to read the post for more information.
The number rating on both UMF and MGO rated honey indicated the concentration of methylglyoxal content in that batch of honey.
The higher the number, the higher the concentration of methylglyoxal. Honey with higher numbers has the same qualities as that with lower numbers, but is more potent.
If a jar has the letters MGO, it has been tested for the methylglyoxal content. The numbers after MG or MGO show the Methylglyoxal Level in mg/kg.
Note: Non-UMF Manuka honey is not inferior honey. It is most often Manuka honey produced by quality beekepers that do not wish to pay the high costs of joining the UMFHA. This does not mean it is a poor quality honey but should always have a MG rating to ensure activity.
You can translate the UMF and MGO numbers like this:
UMF® 5+ = MGO (Methylglyoxal Level) ≥83 mg/kg
UMF® 10+ = MGO (Methylglyoxal Level) ≥261+ mg/kg
UMF® 20+ = MGO (Methylglyoxal Level) ≥829+ mg/kg
It should be noted that some companies have their own rating system. I personally find it easiest to look for the MGO content. It may not be on the front of the label, but is often located somewhere. However, that is not always the case, so you may need to familiarize yourself with the UMF ratings as well.
One factor to note is that the higher the MGO rating, the higher the concentration of methylglyoxal. Your selection will depend on the intended use of Manuka honey.
If you plan to use it to sweeten tea, baked goods, or spread on toast, but want some added benefits, then the lower ratings would be suitable (MGO ~60+).
If you plan to take the honey as a supplement for general well being or digestive health then a higher rating might be in order (MGO ~150+).
For treating wounds and burns, the highest possible rating is best as it has the greatest concentration of antibacterial and antiviral compounds (MGO 200+).

]]>Manuka honey is the most commonly used honey today. It is produced by the bees that pollinate Manuka trees from Australia and New Zealand. It is known to have the highest level of antibacterial activity of all honey.
MGO and UMF Manuka Honey
Most honey has hydrogen peroxide which gives its antibiotic nature. Aside from hydrogen peroxide, Manuka honey has other ingredients that have antibiotic qualities.
One major antibacterial component of Manuka honey is Methylglyxal (MG). It comes from the conversion of another compound, dihydorxyacetone, which is found in high concentration in the nectar of manuka flowers. The antibiotic effect of Manuka honey is stronger if the MG concentration is higher. [1]
Unique Manuka Factor is a scale used to rate the potency of manuka honey. It reflects the concentration of MG. To be considered potent enough to be therapeutic, manuka honey needs a minimum rating of 10 UMF. Honey at or above that level is marketed as "UMF Manuka Honey" or "Active Manuka Honey.
Medical Grade Honey
A medical- grade honey has undergone different processes to ensure it is free from contaminants. Gamma irradiation, filtration and lab controlled conditions are a few of those processes that secure its efficacy.
Manuka honey has antibacterial properties that help fight infections and contribute to wound healing. It eliminates Gram- positive and Gramo negative pathogens as well as fungi and yeasts. It is also useful against various organisms such as drug resistant organisms like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resitant enterococcus. The acidic properties of honey keep the pH relatively low (3.5-6), that inhibits growth and promotes healing of wounds. [2] It has also anti- inflammatory capabilities that speed up healing of wounds.

Snacking is everyone’s favorite pastime. We eat to live but live to eat as well. With so many food options and the constant bombardment of the media, advertising, and our own sweet tooth, we seem to be thinking about food all the time. The downside of snacking is that it can lead to health problems and contribute to obesity.
Why Kids Need to Snack
In our society, children are the most vulnerable to peer pressure and outside influences. That’s why good parenting includes not only teaching good eating habits but also feeding them nutritious meals and of course, healthy snacks. Snacking is important for children because they have smaller stomachs along with a higher metabolism, unlike adults, so they need topping up more often. Children should snack every 3 to 4 hours throughout the day outside their meal times. Small, healthy snacks throughout the day prevent patterns of boredom eating or eating based on emotional factors.
Healthy Snacking
Studies have shown that children need to refuel throughout the day to maintain focus on academics and keep their energy levels up. That’s where snacking plays a crucial part. It’s also important that snacks be health-conscious and meet certain nutritional requirements to gain less weight and produce proper immune growth as they age.
Smart Snacking Ideas
Eating healthy in childhood builds a foundation of smart choices for a lifetime. Fruits, veggies, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products help prevent disease later in life. Sending healthy snacks with your children to school will help sustain your child throughout the day and give them a healthy start in life. Of course, children also want sweets, which may go against the grain of a “healthy diet.” However, there are snack treats from New Zealand available for children. Pacific Resources International (PRI) prides itself in providing healthy and tasty snacks made with nature’s best Manuka Honey as excellent alternatives to processed sugar products that have little or no nutritional value. Snack Healthy, Live Long!
The Truth About School Snacking
When we say goodbye to our children each morning as they toddle off to school, we hope they make good choices – of friends, in learning and eating. Junk food companies target kids because they know how “good” their products taste. How do you compete with a Twinkie vs celery! It’s crucial for parents to counteract these negative influences with teaching children “right from wrong” choices in snacks and empowering them to make the healthy choices. Thankfully there are many tasty and healthy snacks available. And today, kids can tell the difference with a little help from their parents!
