A study conducted with mice by Kai et al found that a specific flavanoid property of propolis, kaempferol, given orally during infection exhibited therapeutic efficacy in limiting influenza symptoms in mice. In another study Shimizu et al discovered that this effect of propolis is dose dependant. A dose of 10mg per kg of body weight was found to reduce weight loss in mice experiencing influenza (the flu) and an oral dose of 2mg per kg was found to prolong their survival times when the influenza virus was a particularly strong strain. Doses at 0.4mg per kg were found to be ineffective. Showing yet again the powerful effects of propolis and its antiviral capabilities in animal models.
If your wondering if mice models means that it will also work in humans then our minds must think alike. According to the Foundation for Biomedical Research95 percent of all lab animals are rats and mice. The reason for this is because their genetic, biological and behavior characteristics closely resemble those of humans. Not only this but scientists can also genetically alter mice to carry genes that are similar to those that cause human disease. Not to mention they take up only a small amount of lab space and are relatively easy to handle.
So yes using mice and rat in experiments can be translated into results that are useful in the treatment of people from diseases or infections such as the flu.
So next time you feel that flu coming grab your bottle of propolis and let it help rid your body of the nasty virus your loving family member may have passed on to you.

From “Honey Heals Canker Sores” by Caroline Praderio from Prevention News….
” “Canker sores have plagued mankind throughout recorded history.” That’s the opening line to a new study published in latest issue of Quintessence International. Dramatic? Sure, a little—but if you’ve ever felt the mind-boggling sting of a canker sore in contact with a hot swig of coffee, “plague” doesn’t seem like such an exaggeration after all. (We could probably come up with a few more choice words, too, come to think of it). Docs still don’t know exactly what causes these painful oral lesions—it could be anything from stress to food allergies to genetic predisposition—but this new study suggests that a fast, effective canker sore treatment is hiding in our kitchen cabinets.
Researchers at Saudi Arabia’s Salman bin AbdulAziz University gathered a group of 94 people suffering from canker sores and randomly separated them into three groups. The first treated their sores with plain old commercial honey, the second used an oral corticosteroid cream, and the third got an over-the-counter product that forms a protective paste to cover sores while they heal. Participants applied their respective treatments three times daily while researchers observed the effects…..
…Get this: In just 4 days, all sores in the honey group had disappeared completely—but the number of sores in groups 2 and 3 hadn’t budged. Honey even helped to soothe pain. After day 1, honey users reported a 95.5% decrease in pain, with total pain elimination by day 2. Groups 2 and 3 were not so lucky: It took them 8 days to reach the same pain-free state.
The results only reinforce honey’s well-documented healing powers—and it’s no surprise to experts that those benefits can work inside the human mouth, too. “In the treatment of mouth ulcers, the main action would be from the anti-inflammatory property of honey,” says Peter Molan, founder of the Honey Research Unit at New Zealand’s University of Waikato. “The potency of this can be seen if honey is used as first aid on a burn or scald—it takes away the pain within about 10 minutes, and redness and blistering do not develop.”
Other potential factors at work: some honeys (like manuka and thyme varieties) have strong anti-bacterial qualities, and many are shown to promote growth of tissues in wound healing. But, Dr. Molan explains, these effects vary greatly depending on where and how the honey is harvested, and some types can be up to 100 times more potent than others. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what about this commercial honey made it so effective—but it’s hard to ignore the impressive results.
Next time the plague descends upon your mouth, try the same method employed in the study. After each meal, wet a sterile cotton ball and wipe the sore clean. Then, apply a small amount of honey using a cotton swab. Canker sores, meet our (very) sweet revenge.”
As referenced above Apitherapy News reported the Researchers findings:
” Honey Beats Traditional Medication in Reducing Canker Sores
Efficacy of honey in comparison to topical corticosteroid for treatment of recurrent minor aphthous ulceration: A randomized, blind, controlled, parallel, double-center clinical trial
Quintessence Int, 2014 Jul 10
Background: Recurrent aphthous ulceration represents a very common mucosal disorder that general dentists may encounter on a daily basis, and for which there is no curative treatment. The best treatment that can be achieved is to avoid local traumatic precipitants, lessen the pain and duration of ulceration by suppressing the local immune response, and prevent secondary infection.
Objective: The objective of this study was to clinically determine the efficacy of honey as a topical treatment of recurrent minor aphthous ulceration in a Saudi cohort.
Method and Materials: A randomized, blind, controlled, parallel, double-center clinical trial was carried out. Honey was applied by patients four times a day for 5 days. Clinical parameters (ulcer size, pain scale, and degree of erythema and healing) were recorded both at baseline and during the follow-up period.
Results: There were 94 subjects, with 180 minor recurrent aphthous ulcerations. The ulcers were distributed as 67, 57, and 56 ulcers for honey, topical corticosteroid, and Orabase treatment, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the honey group and the other two groups in terms of reduction of ulcer size, days of pain, and degree of erythema. No side effects were reported in any group.
Conclusion: Honey was found to be effective and safe in reducing minor aphthous ulcer pain, size, and erythema in a Saudi cohort.”
It was treated with Manuka Honey 5+ once/day on dressing. ER told them it would take 4-6 weeks to heal using silverdene. This healed with no tenderness in 2 weeks. – Ruth Gingerich, CPNP;
This prompted us to do a little more research where we came upon more articles about how honey might be able to help repair skin damage after a burn:
From better nutrition
Natural Healers
Natural antibacterials, including aloe vera, propolis, calendula, and medicinal honey, can be applied after an initial cool soak to help heal minor burns. In the case of propolis, a cream was tested on burn patients against a prescription burn cream (silver sulfadiazine), at the University of Texas medical school. Both treatments prevented infection equally well, but patients treated with propolis suffered less inflammation and healed more quickly.
From The National Center for Biotechnology Information
Objective:
The aim was to evaluate the effect of honey dressing and silver sulfadiazene (SSD) dressing on wound healing in burn patients.
Conclusion:
Honey dressings make the wounds sterile in less time, enhance healing, and have a better outcome in terms of hypertropic scars and postburn contractures, as compared to SSD dressings.

Manuka honey is collected by the bees from the manuka bush that originated from Australia and New Zealand. It is more potent because it has a higher level of methylglyoxal (MGO). MGO or methylglyoxal is a component which makes Manuka honey so special.
What is inflammation?
Manuka honey is naturally used to help lessen inflammation for some health conditions since the early years. But what specifically is inflammation?
Inflammation is the physiological reaction of the body to fight infection and injury. It is our body’s way of communicating with the immune system to defend it against any unfamiliar invaders, such as the bacteria, viruses or any pathogens and without inflammation; wounds will become more serious and deadly.
Acute inflammation is a short- term response with restricted effects. It develops usually after a scrape, a sore throat or a sprained ankle while the chronic inflammation can have a long- term and broad effect and can possibly lead to a certain disease.
Can Manuka Honey help?
There is no solid scientific evidence that Manuka honey can reduce inflammation, however, there are a quite number of clinical trials which reported that there is a reduced symptom of inflammation following the application of honey to wounds. Some of which found to have a soothing effect after application to wounds and burns. There was a decrease of exudates on the wound after it was dressed with honey, which is a good sign for controlling inflamed wounds.
In conclusion, further studies are needed to back-up if Manuka honey can really be a big help for inflammatory conditions. For now, what we can do if there is an inflammation is to follow proper proven procedures that may help lessen the inflammation. We can include Manuka honey as an immune system booster as well.

Most popular commercial body care products contain dangerous chemicals that are harmful to our bodies. This has lead many people to opt for beauty and body care products made with clean, natural ingredients.
Lye in Soap
Getting informed about what ingredients are in the products we use is important. For instance, when looking at the ingredients in our PRI Manuka Honey and Sea Salt Soap you notice Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) first on the list. Many would be shocked to find themselves using a product with Lye as the top ingredient. For many natural body care products the ingredients can be a bit misleading. In fact, there is no true soap without lye and there’s a huge difference between “made with lye” and “containing lye”. Don’t worry, the good news is that soap-makers rely on the chemistry behind the soap making process to produce an all-natural and effective product.
The Chemistry of Soap
Soap is the result of a chemical reaction called saponification that occurs between lye and a type of molecule called a triglyceride (a fat or oil), where both substances are chemically transformed, creating soap and natural glycerin. Neither of the original ingredients exists anymore. All the lye – sodium hydroxide for bar soap is consumed in the reaction.
You can be assured that Pacific Resources’ Manuka Honey and Sea Salt Soap is the purest and most gentle on the skin. Here’s why: Think of hydrogen and oxygen. Left alone, these gases are very dangerous, but when combined in the right amounts (H2O) – you get water which is essential for life.
Lye is an ingredient in pure soap. It is caustic, but when combined with the right amounts of oil and water, makes the purest form of soap. Soap that not only cleans, but leaves skin hydrated. Our Manuka soaps have additional oils to “super fat” the bars making them even more hydrating.
Finally, Manuka Honey Soap has the added healing qualities of Manuka honey and the natural value of Pacific Sea Salt. So next time you use PRI’s Manuka Honey and Sea Salt Soap remember you are not using lye on your skin, you’re using soap.

]]>Yea!!! Spring break is almost here. So where are you heading? Whatever your destination, you still need a list to make sure you pack everything you need.
I always try to plan in advance so that I don’t get stuck packing or planning last minute. So here are some of my travel go-tos:
My Toiletries:
Besides the obvious, shampoo, makeup, here are some of the not so obvious:
Hand Cream. Planes are dehydrating. To keep my skin soft and moisturized to look radiant on your holiday. I reach for PRI’s award-winning Manuka Honey Tropical Coconut Lime Hand Cream. They have two other scents which are equally good but this one is my favorite. I have a thing for lime.
Lip Balm. The sun, wind, ocean, certain foods… a million things can make your lips feel dry and uncomfortable. I reach for PRI’s award-winning Manuka Honey Lip Balm. I throw it in my purse and apply it a few times a day.
On the Road Essentials:
We normally stay in self-hosted apartments, so I bring my preferred soap and toothpaste. I pack PRI’s Propolis and Tea Tree Toothpaste. It keeps my mouth fresh and clean, especially after those rich foods we eat on the road that are heavy on garlic and spices. I also love the Manuka Honey Sea Salt Soap. Besides smelling amazing and adding a faboo scent to my clothes in the suitcase. It’s a lovely bath-spa experience.
My Wellness Care:
Manuka Honey offers a few first aid items that may help with some minor travel mishaps.
Bruises from lugging those suitcases? No problem, for this I pull out the Nectar Balm Bee Venom Cream and apply it at night before bed to help ease any discomfort. I also carry Manuka Oil for sunburn. When I wash my hair with hotel conditioner, I add a few drops of the oil for softer hair.
I DO NOT want to catch a cold from all that travel. I pack a box of Manuka Honey Lozenges to tackle the dry throat along with a few Manuka Honey Sticks. This seems to do the dry mouth trick. The honey sticks, in particular, give me a boost of energy when I am wandering around sightseeing.
Quick Energy Snack:
My all-time favorite: Salted Manuka Honey Caramels!!! I LOVE them! Just put a few in your purse and take them anywhere. They are delicious and best of all they are also good for you.
So happy packing and Bon Voyage. See you around! ✈️ 🛥️
